One scene, two viewpoints
Tell the same encounter from different points of view.

01
Take a closer look
A narrator can report only what they perceive, remember or suppose. Changing the viewpoint therefore changes the information available to the reader. Assumptions are not established facts.
02
Now try it
- Write five sentences in German about someone finding a forgotten book. Use the first person.
- Retell the scene from the book owner’s viewpoint. Underline information that only the owner could know.
03
Think it through
Can a first-person narrator know other people’s thoughts without explanation?
See a suggested answer
Normally not. They can observe behaviour and infer thoughts. A change of viewpoint or a special narrative device would need to be made clear.
